Getting a Maltese pup

Before getting a puppy, you need to realize that this small animal will live with you for many years to come.

Make sure that the puppy is in perfect health.  He must be energetic, clean and have a wet nose, a beautiful coat without dandruff, soft skin without irritations and clean an odorless ears.

Make sure that the puppies are allowed to come inside the house and that they are used to interact with people.  The breeder should inquire about your desire for a Maltese and the way the puppy will live in your home.  After visiting many breeders, choose a puppy that comes from a breeder who truly cares for his litters and their future.

Male of Female????

The choice between choosing a female or a male puppy is a personal one.  Experience shows that there is no important personality differences directly related to the sex of the animal.  Males and females are all energetic, funny, sociable and affectionate.  If you would like to breed, you should opt for a female.  They are in heat twice a year and it usually lasts about 10 days.  Contrary to a perceived myth, females are not more affectionate nor less aggressive than males.  It depends on the personality of the animal.  However, males are more inclined to have a dominant character, wich may initiate quarrels with neighborhood dogs.  He has a tendency to easily mark his territory by urinating.  He's always ready to mate and therefore does not hesitate to run away if he smells a female in heat.
